Unidentified Flying Objects (or UFOs) are objects spotted flying in the sky that seem to be "intelligently controlled" and are (as yet) unidentified. This is what most people are discussing when they talk about UFOs, but technically the "intelligently controlled" part is not necessary for an object in the sky to be considered a UFO. That "intelligently controlled" part is kind of assumed when just about anyone talks about them though, but for the purposes of our research, and our discussion here, we will start with asking just what makes a UFO unidentified and then explore some of the possible explanations for some of them.

To put it simply, what makes a UFO unidentified is that its origins are, as yet, unidentified. Identifying something that's unidentified is the easy part, the tricky part is proving it. Some explanations make sense to me and are more probable than others, but some stretch the boundaries of my imagination. Dave just shakes his head, and mutters under his breath something about a bunch of thick-headed idiots running things, or something like that. I use to point out to him that he is sometimes just as thick headed as they are. That's probably why he mutters it under his breath now. He's tired of me pointing this out to him. Ha ha.

SWARMS?
Anyway, the thing that bothers me about some of these explanations (swamp gas, lenticular clouds, the planet Venus, Mercury or Mars, or pixel residue for example) are their utter silliness when examined with a critical thinker's eye. Even though many of them were more probable than ships from another planet, saying they were really misidentified planets when those same planets were not in that part of the sky at that time, doesn't really help a skeptic's belief that "all" UFOs are either hoaxes or misidentified objects.

Even so, one of my favorite explanations, next to some of Dave's wild ideas, are insect swarms. This explanation, next to fireballs and ball lightning, is the only probable one that makes sense when the UFO actually moves like it is, or they are, intelligently controlled. Bug swarms, or even bird swarms, although not impossible, and are probably more probable than most of us think, are not the answer either, because how are these swarms getting up high enough so that even astronauts are seeing them? And how about the predominate shape that UFOs seem to be going for today, the triangle shape? How in blazes are swarms doing that?

Of course the arguement would be that geese fly in a triangle shape when they fly in a kind of small swarm, but swarms of insects, large enough to blot out part of the sky, flying along at either cruising or higher speeds? Dave laughs at the idea saying, using my logic against me, that it's as probable as them coming from another planet. Probability can be a two-way street, but I did try to correct him by saying the odds are probably better that they are caused by swarms than extraterrestrial sightseers. With his theory, you have to assume they're at least more advanced than us to make the probabilities work, but with swarms, it's already a scientific reality, albeit on a smaller scale. He finally agreed that I was right, but for only that reason and that reason alone. I call that a small victory for critical thinkers everywhere.

The triangle UFOs of today especially eliminates all the other explanations too, including fireballs, meteors, and ball lightning, except for the top four. These are that (1) they are in reality top-secret military research and development aircraft, or (2) that all of them are hoaxes, or (3) the result of some kind of mass hysteria or hypnosis or, to put it simply, it's all an hallucination (mass or singular, take your pick). The fourth one is that they actually are from another planet or from inside the Earth, which leads us neatly into our next discussion.

Which is an examination of the evidence that some people believe (Dave included) makes it possible that there just might be (however improbable) some kind of extraterrestrial (or intraterrestrial) intelligence behind them, which will ultimately lead us to look over the evidence that maybe might suggest where they're really from and where they go while they're here and why.

On the agenda also for later is a discussion about this "mass hysteria" theory, possible military involvement, and also the ugly head of hoaxing and why would anyone want to do that. But first, let's go over some of the more important technical problems first.

Even though Dave still basicly believes that they're intelligently controlled and are from either another planet or inside the earth, he's willing to admit that not all of them are real, and that some of them are probably either secret military aircraft or hoaxes, but and here I agree, he doesn't think that it necessarily follows that all UFOs are hoaxes because some of them are. I agree that some of them are still unidentified, but I hesitate to call any of them from outer space. Not because I don't want to believe they are from outer space, that would be super fantastic in my opinion, but because the critical thinker in me wishes there was way better evidence.

The major stumbling block for most of the scientific community to accept the outer space origins of UFOs is mostly because of the physics that needs to be overcome for someone to travel from the nearest planet known to science today, or for us to go there. Considering that the nearest star, Proxima Centauri (scientific name: V645 Cen), is over 4 lightyears away (most scientist believe some kind of heat source, like a star, at the minimum, is needed for a planet to harbor any kind of life); that would definitely be one long trip, and practically impossible, considering the amount of speed needed to travel just so we could do it in just one of our lifetimes.

As luck would have it, the nearest star (Proxima Centauri) is also part of a star system (Alpha Centauri) that might also have a planet (Alpha Centauri Bb) orbiting one of the stars (Alpha Centauri B):

But, even if that nearest planet were habitable (who's to really say that fire, crystals or ice aren't a form of life that we just don't understand yet), there's still that original distance of over 4 lightyears that needs to be traveled, which when multipled out comes to over 42 trillion kilometres (or 25.2 trillion miles). That's a long way to go in a car. At 60 miles per hour (MPH), it would take at the least 420 billion hours (or over 47 million years) to get there by car, and even if we multiply 60 MPH by 1,000 (60 x 1,000 = 60,000 MPH), it would still end up taking over 47 thousand (47,945) years. And, even if we multiplied THAT by 1,000 (60,000 x 1,000 = 60 million MPH, almost one tenth the speed of light), it would still take over 40 (47.95) years to get there, and that doesn't even include the return trip. Needless to say, nothing that we have now, nor have any idea how to build yet, could travel at that speed. The ship would also have to have a power supply or a way to create all the energy needed to move that fast, and that far, and also be able to supply or resupply all the air, water and food the crew would need for that kind of journey, and what happens if they break down along the way? And that doesn't even begin to take into account that navigation would also be one hell of a challenge, not to mention the G Forces the crew would have to endure along the way.

And, that's why many people think it's impossible for UFOs to come from another planet. We like to adjust the word "impossible" in that statement to "practically impossible", you'll understand why later.

Dave does bring up an interesting point of which I agree, and that is if we assume the extraterrestrials' understanding of physics is the same as ours, then that does lower the probability tremendously that UFOs really are from another planet, but what if it isn't? What if their understanding of physics is a thousand years ahead of ours? It's like asking ourselves just what will our understanding of physics be in a thousand years, and what will we be able to do with that information and where will we be able to go?

It's a mind boggling idea really, especially considering how far and fast science (particularily physics and electronics) has advanced in the last hundred years alone, but proving it is near impossible. It's like trying to prove something will happen before it happens. There are some ways to theoretically prove it might be possible, and one of the things at the top of that list that scientist need to know in order to get onboard with this idea, short of a major physics changing discovery (like time travel for example), is some mathematical formula or formulas (or equations) that show that it's even just a little feasible that traveling lightyear distances is possible, and not just theoretically feasible, but actually feasible in the practical sense. The only thing we know for sure right now that this is even way less than slightly possible, although still highly theoretical, is the theory that traveling at the speed of light stops time, and that one of the ways to theoretically do this is to use wormholes, like tunnels or bridges, to get from one point in space to another point, regardless of the distance between them.

Theoretically, when you enter one end of a wormhole, no matter where the other end is, you are suppose to instantaneously appear at that other end, like walking through a door, with maybe half your body going into the door, and the other half coming out, except that the very center of the doorway can be any distance you want, even up to a trillion lightyears away. It's one of the anomolies of space and time that were discovered when science began to finally take a real serious look at Einstein's theories and the mathematics on which they were based. Of course, if we were at the subatomic level and tried to get from one side of a door to the other, it would take longer than it takes us now, so in a way, we're already kind of doing what a wormhole would do except on a whole different level, or something like that. Maybe we just need to be bigger? A million times bigger. Would we collapse into ourselves if we were that big? What if we didn't? At that height, it would take almost a half a minute (approximately 25 seconds) for the light from our shoes to reach our eyes. Wow!

Problems in physics are interesting to think about, especially if you don't have to do the math, ha ha. Not that there's anything wrong with doing math. No, not at all, as George and Jerry once said to each other in one of those episodes of "Seinfeld" we all love to hate.

A discussion on Physics and Wormholes would make this webpage longer than it needs to be, so we'll have to set up a new webpage later specifically dedicated to Physics, but until we do that, we'd like to atleast say a little something about Quantum Mechanics and String Theory here, then a quick discussion about Occam's Razor before we finally get down and dirty and begin discussing the history of UFOs.

Simply put, Quantum Mechanics (also known as QM, quantum physics, or quantum theory) involves the study of physics at the subatomic level. One of the most interesting theories to come out of the field of QM is called String Theory. This new theory supposes that each or almost all the subatomic particles that make up the known universe are ultimately made up of a large quantity of tightly packed waves of energy called strings. If this theory is correct, it means that all matter is really made up of energy, and energy is easier to move at the speed of light than matter itself is.

Me and Dave have had some pretty interesting discussions about String Theory and one of the most interesting avenues we've taken was the idea that if all matter is ultimately energy, then that makes matter (and possibly reality itself) all an illusion. We don't want to take credit for this particular train of thought, because Dave tells me that the reason he even brought it up to begin with was because of a discussion he remembers hearing while watching a TV show one day. It was called "Northern Exposure", but he doesn't remember what specific episode it was. All he remembers is that it was about a Circus coming to Cicely and the discussion, about matter being an illusion, was between Chris (the morning DJ for the only radio station in town) and one of the Circus people, or something like that. The idea has probably been around for way longer than that, but that's when Dave first remembers hearing about it anyway, and he also remembers that this particular discussion is what got him first interested in physics and ultimately String Theory.

Although String Theory (and the possibility that matter is really just energy) is a difficult (if not an almost impossible) theory to prove, it's still an interesting possibility, which brings with a whole boatload of other possibilities, like the possibility that some of Dave's weird beliefs might be possible. It opens the door to the possibility that matter can shapeshift.

Now let's assume for a minute that String Theory is true, imagine what could become possible if we were able to unlock the secret of what holds those strings together and be able to figure out how to swap them instantaneously with another batch of strings a million lightyears away, or maybe we'll be able to shift shapes around like a human into a werewolf (that's one of Dave's favorite subjects by the way) or into anything. If all matter really is an illusion anyway, why couldn't that be possible?

Another interesting possibility that also kind of comes from QM is the belief that anything is possible, just not always probable, which if you've read enough of our website, you'll notice we use that phrase alot here, and that's the way our discussions go also, Dave comes up with the wild ideas, and I do the probabilities.

Some Physicist argue that sometimes the possible probabilities are zero which means they're impossible. But, some of them are not so sure about that and believe that the more exact a calculation for probabilities is, and even if the zero ends up being an impossibly small number as a result, it's still a probability.

Me and Dave tend to lean towards believing also that nothing can really reach zero, and even if the probability is an impossibly small number (say a decimal point followed by a million, billion, trillion zeroes with a one at the end), that's still a probability that we like to call "practically impossible".

For example, although a four-sided triangle seems impossible, Dave thinks it's possible if you look at the area of the triangle as the fourth side. I admit it's a weird way of looking at it, but it does kind of prove that even something seemingly impossible might be possible if you look at in the right way. But, that's just our opinion and that doesn't even begin to make it a fact.

When we first started to discuss how we were going to put this page together about UFOs, the first thing we talked about was what exactly made them unidentified, then we tried to figure out how to hoax each sighting or experience if we could, while at the same time using the principle of Occam's Razor to decide where exactly to concentrate our more indepth research.

The only problem Dave had with this approach was that the most interesting aspect of UFO research, and that was the interstellar possibilities, would be practically ignored. So we compromised and put that almost at the very top of what we first discussed up above, but there's more involved than just the physics. Much much more, but we'll get into that later.

Let's stop here for a minute and discuss Occam's Razor. If you've ever done enough research into any kind of unexplained phenomenon, especially UFOs, you've probably run across that term before:

We like to add at the end of that, " ...the one that makes the fewest assumptions should be selected [and that's where you should begin your research, not end it]," rather than leave it open so people can assume if it passes the test of Occam's Razor, it automatically becomes the one and only answer to the problem, which is kind of ironic in a way, because doesn't that assumption violate the whole spirit of the principle? We could get into a long and philosophical discussion about assumptions, but when it comes down to it, our assumption that their assumption is wrong is just as bad as their assumption that we're wrong, except that our assumption is more in line with what we think should also be the central philosophy for all scientific inquiry, and that is to do it with an open-mind. This philosophy behind science, we think, should always overide all assumptions that eliminate keeping your mind open to any possibility, and we'll leave it at that.

Anyway, enough said about all that, let's get to the fun part, the history of UFOs; which is weird enough to kind of help prove that old adage that nothing is stranger than fact, even fiction, or something like that, but before we start on that roller coaster ride, let's hear a word or two from our definition squad...

One of my favorite theories is the Ancient Astronaut theory. Of all the one's I've heard from Dave and others I've read while doing research for this website, this is the one I wish would become true the most, but unfortunately, and even though there's a lot of intriguing evidence, the probabilities are so low, they're practically nil.

Until someone (or something) actually comes here and proves that he (or she) are really from another planet and the easiest way to do that would be by showing them how they did it, show them the craft, give them the mathematical formulas, bring someone back with them, but until that actually happens, UFOs will always be the punchline to many many unearned jokes.

But, that has never stopped Dave from talking about it like it's a proven fact. In a way, I'm glad he does still believe in them. The debates between us are worth it. I just think it's an interesting subject. In all honesty, the same kind of thing goes on with evolution. There are a lot of people, including many scientist, that talk about it as though it's a fact, and last time I checked, it was still just a theory and not a law.

I'm not in anyway putting down the theory of evolution, there is more evidence to prove it's true... it's just that, in my mind anyway,there are just a few unanswered questions that make me wonder just a little whether it's the real biological "theory of how everything," came to be, the holy grail of life itself. I myself think, and Dave agrees with me here, that DNA is really the holy grail.

DNA, for example, has no evolutionary history. It just seems to have popped up in some tidepool a million or so years ago. Like we always say, anything's possible, just not always probable. There are many more questions, but for all intent and purposes, we consider evolution a good litmus test for where scientific thought and research is currently headed. Let's just say that it's what much of current science itself uses as a lithmus test for where research should be headed and leave it at that.

Anyway, the best source for Astronaut theories are the books written by Erich von Däniken, he is not the originator of this theory, but he is credited with popularizing it in the public's imagination.

Probably some of the most intriguing evidence can be found in ancient petroglyphs and geoglyph carvings and man-made formations, some of which have been around for at least a couple thousand years Let's start with the petroglyphic evidence.

"Petroglyphs dating back thousands of years ago by ancient Indians in the American Southwest. According to Indian folklore, two objects collided high in the sky and one crash-landed in the region of Death Valley. Some men arrived (presumably in another ship) and spent some time repairing the damaged craft and were observed by the local Indians. The two images below may possibly depict the ship (left) used by the men who came to repair the damaged craft. In comparing the two images, the one on the right seems to depict structural damage around the edges and the bottom. Could it be the one that allegedly crashed? The images are stills taken from an old TV series entitled 'In search of...' hosted by Leonard Nimoy."

Me and Dave have both looked at the photo at the above source (specifically about a quarter of the way down the page under the same title quoted above, "United States - Native Americans") and it's hard not to see two UFOs in the photo there. They kinda look like two round derby hats, in a way. But, what exactly does "thousands of years" mean? Does it mean two thousand, four thousand or maybe even older than that. We need to get more information in that area.

Anyway after the above website, we found another awesome one with pages and pages of the many ancient petroglyphs from around the world that look like either ancient astronauts or UFOs.

We also found a US National Monument that's suppose to have the largest number of petroglyphs in the world:

Petroglyphs are carvings in rock, sometimes found in caves, and some of them even do suspiciously look like either UFOs or astronauts of some kind, and you can't deny it. But just because they look like something, doesn't mean that's what they are. It's no different when someone says it isn't a UFO, that don't mean they're right either. The only reason science doesn't recognize UFOs or Ancient Astronauts is because of the currently accepted theory of Homo sapien evolution, and that theory is that Homo sapiens evolved from the chimpanzee:

Right off, we seem to be finding different dates concerning when humans crossed into America. Another source states that they crossed about 11,000 years ago. Something else we'll also have to look into further.

Anyway, those petroglyphs certainly do give one pause, but regardless of that, the probabilites are with evolution and religion over UFOs and Ancient Astronauts. Mostly because it is more believable, but that doesn't mean you should dismiss the whole UFO or ancient astronaut theory all together. Keeping an open-mind should be the bedrock of all scientific research, but unfortunately, science doesn't put much stock in the whole UFO fiasco.

Dave believes UFO and Ancient Astronauts are more than just believable, it's what happened. I, myself, believe it's more probable they aren't real, but that don't make it impossible, just less probable that they are.

I just have a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea that some of those damn glyphs we saw are just coincidence or misinterpreted religious symbols, and that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

NAZCA LINES
When petroglyphs get large enough, and they are carved into the geology, like hillsides or mountaintops, then they are called geoglyphs. The best example of these are the Nazca Lines in Peru. These are so large, you can only fully see them from the air. Which is kind of why some people think they are possible leftover evidence of a landing strip for some kind of ancient flying machine.

I do have to admit that the design does remind me of what an airport looks like from the air, but that detracts from the Ancient Astronaut theory just a little. What detracts from it is the supposition that an intelligent being would fly at least 4 million light years in a plane similar to the ones we use today. I personally just think they would be more advanced.

Dave suggested an interesting theory that he admits he originally got as a result of his fascination with the TV series franchise created by Gene Roddenberry (currently under the ownership of CBS), the original Star Trek. He also remembers that NASA also used the same concept with their first Apollo mission to the moon. The idea probably didn't start with NASA, but that's the earliest Dave remembers learning about it.

His idea is that Extraterrestrials came in vehicles that carried the airplanes with them that they used once they got here. That's a possibility, but another one is that they are so advanced that they can design airplanes that can fly that long a distance, but still haven't advanced enough to make them easier to land than our planes. This seems highly unlikely, but still a possibility nonetheless.

Although the theories about Ancient Astronauts using the Nazca Lines like airports is very intersting, I do tend to agree with the science community on this one that they are religious symbols, but what I don't understand is why are they are so big. The obvious conclusion is that they were made that big so they could be seen from the air, or from heaven. That not only gives creedence to the explanation that they could be religious symbols and that's all they are, at least according to the scientific community anyway, but it also gives a little creedence to the idea that whomever built these lines might have had contact with these Gods.

In short, the scientific communities explanation is more believable than the explanation involving Astronauts from another planet, but there is a long history of the scientific community's beliefs being sometimes challenged and sometimes ultimately proven wrong, maybe this is one of those times. Only more research, and maybe a lot of time, will tell us for sure.

The Ancient Astronaut theory involves more than just petroglyphs and geoglyphs and we'll get into that more later after we finish discussing The Bible which we will do next.

There maybe more references than just the ones above, and when we find them, we'll add them here, but the ones we have already are pretty good examples of passages that could be interpreted as possible UFO reports of the ancient kind, and interesting for that reason alone. There's more too. Not only does some of The Holy Bible reads like an ancient UFO report, but there are other books that were excluded from the final version we see today that have some even odder stories that anyone would be hardpressed to explain as anything but a UFO sighting of some kind.

Me and Dave both don't know what any of those Bible reports actually are, although Dave tends to be biased in favor of the UFO explanation, but I personally just don't know, there's just not enough good or real evidence to prove it one way or the other unless you use Occam's Razor as a starting point which would tell me that the descriptions are merely methaphorical or analogous in nature, or simply put, they are used to take the place of something else to make or prove a point, like the moral of a story. We'll leave it at that for the time being, and get back to this discussion later.

But the UFO-like stories don't end there, not by a long shot. There are also some very interesting religious coincidences that suspiciously resemble at least a couple modern day UFO-like reports. For example, this whole business about Jesus and Muhammad rising or ascending up to Heaven together, only Jesus did it first almost 600 years earlier. These are one of the things that we're looking into also.

A rule I have whenever I read controversial theories is to also read the opposing views as soon after as I can arrange it. Probably some of the most noteworthy opposing responses to Erich von Däniken include a documentary by Nova called "The Case of the Ancient Astronauts", and the following:

P. Lovecraft's short stories 'The Call of Cthulhu' written in 1926, and 'At the Mountains of Madness' written in 1931."

Although we haven't seen the Nova Documentary yet, we hope to soon, but we do know some of the things that were debunked, such as the map showing Antartica, and the rust-free iron pillar of unknown origin that wasn't really rust-free, and most of his evidence breaks down under close examination. But interestingly enough, some of the criticism aimed at Däniken is that he gets some of the numbers wrong, and also that he is a plagiarist, that he passes off other people's ideas as his own.

I think the complaints about plagiarism does little, if anything, to discredit Däniken's basic theory. It's more a criticism of the messenger than the message. Nor does giving out wrong numbers debunk anything about the Ancient Astronaut theory either.

Sure it doesn't look good when you say something weighs 800 pounds, when all it really weighs is a 130 tons, but let's get real here for a minute folks, if the real weight was 100 pounds instead of 130 tons, than yeah, you got a good reason to say that kind of mistake helps to debunk some of his theories, but 130 tons is still a whole lotta weight. That still doesn't make it right and hopefully Däniken has fixed this mistake. One thing that does look bad is that mistakes like that reflect on your research and how thorough it was and that alone can undermine anyone's work, but use it as a basis for debunking a whole theory? Sorry, neither me nor Dave believe that one.

Of course, we also realize the irony of assuming that Däniken is wrong about the weight and the one criticising him is right, but we'll also double check the numbers at some point later to see which is right, and which is wrong.

Of course we're not advocating plagiarism either, if Däniken knew his ideas had originated with Robert Charroux and still didn't give him credit, than that is not right and he should fix that, but if he didn't know about Charroux until after he had written his book, then he can be forgiven, but that's hard to prove now. It seems from the above passage that Däniken did at least credit Charroux finally in the bibliography of subsequent printings. That, for us anyway, is the end of it except to mention that it's still the ideas themselves that are important and not from where they came, and one thing that no one can not deny is that Däniken books are what really got the world talking about Ancient Astronauts, and as a result also put a spotlight on the other authors who probably would never have received such publicity otherwise.

We have finally found a copy of the Nova Documentary mentioned above, and are right this minute watching it and although much of it does kind of disprove some of Däniken's theories, there are still at least a couple of things they couldn't explain.

Well more than just a couple, but we'll take some of these on as we discuss the other earlier evidence next.

EGYPTION PYRAMIDS
The best known pyramids are of course the Egyptian pyramids located on the Necropolis of the Giza Plateau. They are amazing structures that according to conventional wisdom are believed to have been built around 3,200 to 2,560 B.C., but there is some evidence that they are older than that. The evidence is a water worn look to the rocks, like they survived some kind of long-term rainy period, but that area of Northern Africa (the Sahara Desert) where the Giza Plateau is located hasn't seen any measurable amount of rain for at least nine or ten thousand years ago.

Dave just reminded me that maybe it wasn't the Great Pyramid that showed signs of water wear, but the Sphynx. I think he's right, but before we talk about the Sphynx, let's get back to the Great Pyramids.

Anyway, no matter how old they really are, they're still considered technical marvels, especially the Great Pyramid (Pyramid of Khufu). They're are many estimations as to how long it took to build, and depending on the criteria, it was technically possible to have built them in anywhere from ten to twenty years, according to some authorities.

It has been calculated that over 2.3 million limestone blocks of varying weights and sizes were needed to make up the entire structure of the Great Pyramid. The Nova documentary we mentioned earlier, that tried to disprove Däniken's Ancient Astronaut theories, showed where the stones may have come from, and how they were cut. The documentary also explained that with a work force of 100,000 to pull and assemble one block every five minutes it would have been possible.

Assuming all of that is true and that they also had the food to feed such a large crew everyday and the trees (if they used trees to roll the blocks). Let's assume that's all true, and I personally am skeptical that both could be met, but it definitely wasn't impossible. But, what moves it closer to impossible, especially considering the kind of tools they had back then, that many of the stones fit together with a tolerance, or gap, of no more than 1/50th of an inch, or 0.5 millimetres.

Of course even if you consider that these blocks are made of limestone, which is a relatively soft stone and easy to cut, it's very hard to imagine (even assuming all of them were precision craftsmen and had the tools to do the job) how they could cut and precisely shape many of the stones to meet the tolerances mentioned above. During the Nova documentary, they demonstrated how fast they could cut the stones from a close by quarry using the tools available back then, and we both admit that it was a pretty impressive demonstration and as a result agree it's possible to at least cut the stones pretty accurately. Limestone lends itself to being separated in even layers, and even the sides looked clean, but it's hard to imagine them just taking the stones freshly cut pulling them to the Pyramid and just laying them down on the chance that the sides were cut with an incredible 90 degree accuracy and that the tops and bottoms were exactly parallel to each other, and how and what exactly did they use to check that it was accurate? They might have used a string with a weight at the end, but that doesn't prove the sides are exactly 90 degrees (right angle) to both the top and the bottom.

Putting all this together and into practice seems like an almost impossibly mind boggling job to me, but even so, I think it's more probable that happened than that ancient astronauts helped or built the Great Pyramid themselves. One thing I do agree with Dave on is that it is certainly easier to explain how it was done using advanced technology from an advanced civilization (even more advanced than we are), than that our ancestors did it with the tools they had, especially how incredibly accurate many of the blocks fit together. This is one of the things they didn't explain in the Nova documentary, although at the end they did say that some things just can't be explained, yet.

Like I've said many times before, there is nothing wrong with putting forth improbable theories and then trying to prove them, but ignoring the ancient astronaut theory entirely is not good science, a science that is open to all ideas and willing to look outside the box is the kind of science I like. Who knows, maybe that thing outside the box will steer us to even greater discoveries that go beyond all of our wildest dreams.

Also as a footnote to the above discussion, we did find out (subject to verification) that tools for measuring right angles were available during the building of The Great Pyramid.

OTHER PYRAMIDS
There are many other pyramids all over the world besides the Pyramids of Egypt that, in varying degrees, also have some of the same problems building them as those associated with building the Pyramids in Egypt, but they do all together beg the question, why do they all use the same basic pyramid design? Can this be explained away by coincidence or maybe the real answer is because they were all built by the same people, or maybe these people (Ancient Astronauts) just gave all these pyramid builders the same plans, and also the know how on how to build them?

Or maybe, the inspiration really came from something as simple as how mountains and hills are designed. Big on the bottom getting smaller as you got to the top. I personally like that explanation, but that don't necessarily make it the right one, just a probable one out of many.

TIAHUANACO (Tiwanaku)
If you look at Fig. 001a above, you'll see that not too far from the Nazca Lines in Peru is the mysterious city of Tiahuanaco. Some people also call it Puma Punku (or PumaPunku), although it's really a specific place in Tiahuanco (or near it) and not the city itself.

From what we've read, there are many unexplained things located here, but to us, one of the most amazing things is kind of related to one of our problems with the Great Pyramid in Egypt is how the precisely cut blocks of stone that you can see strewn all about the place were cut. Some of the blocks at PumaPunku are not only cut at extremely precise right angles that look real smooth, but have also have been drilled into, sections cut out, and intricately precise right angled borders carved out somehow to create a relief of what can only be described as a raised H. That's why they're called H-blocks. In short, they look very different from the blocks of stone used in Egypt.

It makes a point by point arguement for the probabilty that our ancestors were smart enough to figure out a way to do this, plus I found out that squares (for checking right angles) were available at the time that the Pyramids in Egypt were estimated to have been built, so that question has been answered, subject to verification of course.

But, none of that makes the Ancient Astronaut theory impossible, just a whole lot less probable, but I'd still have to see someone make those blocks, as precisely as they look and to scale, with my own eyes to see how easy it is.

EASTER ISLAND STATUES
Probably one of the most famous oddities in the world are the giant stone statues that seem to be gaurding Easter Island.

The best we decided to do, until we figured a better way, was to include everything before the Arnold sighting, except for anything that clearly had to do with the "Ancient Astronaut" theory. There are many interesting sightings before 1947 that, at least on the surface, don't seem to be about "Ancient Astronauts". Many of these UFOs were called "Sky Ships" or "Cloud Ships".

Alexander the Great was reported to have seen a fiery disk during the siege of Tyre in 329 B.C., it was reported to have brought down a stone wall with beams of lightning, or something like that.

"Eyewitness and artist, Hans Glaser, carved an extraordinary woodcut that shows an epic battle of sky machines, which supposedly took place over Nuremberg, Germany on April 4th, 1561. According to reports, just after dawn broke that April morning, hundreds of German citizens beheld a spectacle the likes of which the Earth has rarely (if ever) seen when what was described as a 'war in the heavens' took place in the skies above their fair city. FLYING SHIPS WITH ANCHORS
Probably the weirdest eyewitness sighting ever was the flying ship that got its anchor lodged in a Church, but the anchor part is only half of what was weird about this account. The following is from an obscure Irish manuscript, "Speculum Regali ("The King’s Mirror"), which has in it's records an incident that "allegedly" occurred in the year 956 A.D.: SOURCE: Flying Saucers - Serious Business

[p. 5] "'There happened in the borough of Cloera, one Sunday while people were at Mass, a marvel. In this town there is a church to the memory of St. Kinarus. It befell that a metal anchor was dropped from the sky, with a rope attached to it, and one of the sharp flukes caught in the wooden arch above the church door. The people rushed out of the church and saw in the sky a ship with men on board, floating at the end of the anchor cable, and they saw a man leap overboard and pull himself down the cable to the anchor as if to unhook it. He appeared as if he were swimming in water. The folk rushed up and tried to seize him; but the bishop forbade the people to hold the man for fear it might kill him. The man was freed and hurried up the cable to the ship, where the crew cut the rope and the ship rose and sailed away out of sight. But the anchor is in the church as a testimony to this singular occurrence.'"

The anchor is suppose to still be there, but we haven't found anything to confirm that, but we'll keep our eyes open as we do more research.

There are other references to this event including the writings of an aristocrat known as Gervase of Tilbury between 1210 and 1214, but this specific account (although similar to the Cloera Incident) happened at a different time and place:

And not only that, but those similar "Anchor" and "Sky Ship" incidents are recorded throughout history including some relatively recent ones. Compared to the 1200s anyway, they're recent.

A couple of the more interesting ones (including a couple from 1897) which also came from the above source. The first happened in Gravesend, which is located in the northwestern part of Kent, England in 1211. It is very similar to the Cloera and Tilbury incidents mentioned above, even down to happening outside another Church while services were going on.

Our second "Sky Ship" and "anchor" event happened on Saturday April 5, 1897, about 15 miles outside Sioux City, Iowa where a farmer (Hibbard) was dragged 30 feet by an anchor from a "Sky Ship". It's also suppose to be the first "anchor" report found in the United States. Both of the above reports can be found at the same source mentioned above.

And of course, there's the "Alexander Hamilton Incident" which occurred during the same month and year as the Sioux City Incident, but we'll talk about that incident in a little bit.

Which leads us to our next discussion...

THE "AIRSHIP" WAVES
The UFO phenomenon took an interesting detour towards the end of the Ninteenth Century (1850-1930). That is when "Airship" sightings, for some reason, became prevalent. Most of them predate the recorded history of "Airships" like the Zeppelin (Zeppelin LZ 1), which would not see the light of day until the year 1900.

We'll bore you with the details, but here is a quick history of airship development, specifically the rigid ones:

Now, if you noticed in the timeline above, we included (1897) the infamous Alexander Hamilton "Airship" incident. This incident, in our opinion, is probably one of the most credible "Airship" reports we've ever read. The date listed above (APR-21 [WED]) is not the date of the sighting, but the date Hamilton swore to the accuracy of his report which was signed by ten seemingly credible witnesses.

According to our original source, pages 6-7 from "Flying Saucers - Serious Business" by Frank Edwards, Alexander Hamilton himself was a member of the House of Representatives, but now we learn that we may have been duped on this one. You judge, here is the explanation as to why this is a hoax:

The source above (and several others also) mentions Hamilton belonging to a liars club, some mention a competition, while our original source (and no other source we've found so far even mentions this part) that he was a member of the House of Representatives. Now putting all the politician jokes to one side for the minute, let's be serious, would you vote for someone who belonged to a liars club? This doesn't make any sense to us and we're now trying to verify whether Hamilton was or wasn't a member of the House of Representatives in either his home state of Kansas or in Washington? We'll get back to this question later.

Anyway regardless of whether the Hamilton story was fake or not, it's not like it was an isolated incident. As a matter of fact, from 1896 to 1897 is considered today the golden years of "Airship" sightings, but they continued until the 1920s, with a smattering of reports in the Twenties. More than 25 years (1896-1920s) is a long time to carry on a hoax of this magnitude. So far we' ve found well almost a dozen sightings, just from our original source alone (and we're only up to page 10), that we are going to investigate further, and from what we've seen so far, those are just the tip of the iceberg. There are whole books on the subject of unidentified "Airship" sightings alone. Probably the most well known one is the one written by Daniel Cohen, "The Great Airship Mystery: A UFO of the 1890s, published in 1981. We are in the process of getting this one, but there are many others. Some of the more notable ones are based on the "Airship" scare in Britain during 1909. What makes the American "Airship" sightings odder than the European sightings, since rigid "Airships" were already on record as being flown in Germany since 1900, although not being rigid enough to fly very far, the 1909 sightings are not believed to be from Germany, although there was a huge controversy at the time as many people were convinced they were a prelude to an invasion by Germany. Considering that World War I was just around the corner, and the political climate at the time, it's understandble.

Getting sidetracked here, sorry, if you look at our timeline above, you'll see that the first rigid airships in recorded history didn't exist in North America until 1923.

So, what the hell was going on with those "Airship" waves of the late 1800s and the early 1900s? It's mostly speculation, because outside of the eyewitness reports, there's very little evidence that any of them ever happened, but there are still many theories out there. Hollow Earth, Extraterrestrials, Reptoids, or my favorite, Secret Military Research into possibly developing remote control balloons that could fly and drop bombs anywhere. Even Sasquatch has his own theory. He or she probably tells it too their kids while they huddle together during cold nights. Is this true? Who cares, this is about UFOs remember. Ha ha. just kidding. But seriously, the military theory is my favorite, mostly because it's interesting, but also because it would probably pass the "Occam's Razor" test better than the rest.

The only obvious problem with this, is why are they still keeping it secret? There are only two answers to that question, well three really if you just think the government likes keeping secrets and that's enough of an explaination to you. The other two are that the government is still doing experiments with bomb dropping balloons, or the third, none of the above; meaning North American inventors were building and flying their own rigid airships in total and absolute secrecy for years (at least a couple decades), and still to this day not a word has been leaked or gotten out from anyone involved? There are theories and some evidence is out there if you read almost any book about the "Airship" mystery, but mostly we still have to ask, why? Why would anyone keep this secret for so long?

Think about this for a minute, where are you going to build this thing, this airship? If you have neighbors, you certainly can't build it in your back yard, or have all this material delivered to your apartment so you can build it on the roof. Not if you want to maintain all this secrecy that's going to go on for over a hundred years. You have to find a mountain top or some small clearing deep in the woods or in the middle of some desert somewhere, like where Area 51 is now "supposedly" located. Keep in mind also that you still have to get all your stuff out to where you are going to assemble and put together and launch this airship.

One thing that does kind of possibly, maybe, help support this building it in the middle of the desert theory is that the airship waves of the late 1890s started out West, and where are most of the North American deserts located? Think about that one for a minute.

THE "HOLLOW EARTH" THEORY
The Hollow Earth theory is my second favorite just because it's a fun thing to think and talk about. Dave introduced me to it back when I first met him. It's a pretty hard subject to take to right from the get go. It's where some people believe Atlantis is or that a race of reptilians reside. Plotting together to take over the topside, with the help of some select spies amongst us. There are even some people who believe our current President, Barack Obama, is a reptilian. The two Bushes, Clinton, and especially Reagan, were all reptilians, at least that's what some people believe. Dave believes in some weird shit, but this is not one of them.

Despite all that we currently know about our Earth, and it's surprising just how much of it hasn't been explored yet or been visited very often. The deepest parts of the ocean, under the Antarica or the North Pole, or some parts of South America or Africa and Asia. Even North America has some pretty isolated spots. Not to mention Alaska, all of Northern Canada, the Amazon area in South America, and also one of our favorites which is right here in the Pacific Northwest, Olympic National Park, which has about a million acres, half of which is inaccessible except by foot or air.

We haven't even dug that far down into the Earth's crust either. The deepest we've gone, as of this writing, was no more than 12.3 km (7.6 mi) in Russia. Scientist think they know what's inside the Earth and reject the idea outright that there are civilizations and cities under there. I don't know what to believe really, but there's about as much evidence to support civilizations living inside the Earth as there is to prove UFOs come from another planet, most of it is anecdotal at best, and the only difference are the UFO photos and videos, there's nothing like that for the Hollow Theorist to point to except some photos of a possible hole at the top of the world.

For just a minute, despite all the scientific evidence against it, pretend its possible that a whole separate civilization that has florished inside the Earth for as long, if not longer, than our civilization has on the surface. For just one minute pretend that's true.

It would certainly make more sense then for UFOs to come from a planet lightyears away, at least more probable anyway. Then, they would just need to be a couple hundred years ahead of us in technological know how, or maybe just a little ahead which is suggested by the short time span between the start of the "Airship" waves and the actual recorded history of "Airship" development. Dave theorizes that the ship's are launched from deep down in the ocean and they pop out like a cork, fly up into the air, where the crew kick starts the engine and off they go. It's a funny little theory, but that's Dave, and the first thing I asked was, how do they get the ship home back into the Earth? He thought about this for a couple days, and his answer was that they do what we did when we went to the moon, they just leave it here, maybe they burn them, sink them, or leave them to deteriorate in the woods... or desert.

Even though the Hollow Earth theory for the origins of UFOs is more probable than being from a planet lightyears away, there is still the scientific reality to consider, and that is that all the seismic evidence so far points away from the probability that the earth is hollow, but that don't mean that underneath parts of the Earth's crust, particularily under the oceans, there may be pockets of habitable space and breathable air.

In short, the Hollow Earth Theory is still just an unproven theory, but maybe someday...

Anyway, this brings us to recent events which are relevant to the "Airship" sightings around the turn of the 20th Century. In 1925, a helium reserve was set up by the US government. It was originally setup, because at that time rigid "Airships" (called "dirigibles") were becoming prominent in Europe, especially the Zepplins in Germany, and the government was concerned enough about them that they didn't want to be left defenseless. At the time, they were definitely a threat as they could be used to drop bombs.

This reserve was started shortly after the first recorded dirigible was completed (on Monday, August 20, 1923) anywhere in North and South America. It is still part of the government's budget, but with rising deficits, some in Congress are trying to end the program. There's no real military reason to continue funding this program as dirigibles aren't a real threat anymore.

We also learned, that even though helium is the second most common element in the Universe (next to hydrogen), because of our current technological limitations, it is practically impossible to extract it from anything in any kind of usable form. That wouldn't be such a big deal if all we needed it for was to fill ballons for birthday parties and such, but it is also used in scientific experiments. Some people even believe it was instrumental in many important scientific discoveries.

'For MRI machines that need a stable high magnetic field, there is also no alternative. It is estimated that if cost was not an issue, the amount of helium gas trapped in current and future gas wells worldwide could last between 200 or 300 years.' That would buy us some time to figure out how to ensure helium sticks around. However, brace yourself for costs to soar 'very high,' he predicts. How high? 'It depends on how quickly all major helium users adopt ways to conserve and to recycle. When the current helium-rich gas wells are used up, the price could easily soar tenfold... '"

If only to ensure that science and the medical community has enough of a supply to continue what it does best (saving lives and moving our scientific knowledge forward), we feel the helium reserve project should be continued, but that's just our opinion.

Now back to our UFO discussion, currently in progress.

1926 TO 1947
1926 to 1947 was a relatively quiet time for UFO sightings. Probably the biggest news were the Adamski sightings, but those didn't happen until the 1940s and 50s.

George Adamski (1891-1965), a Polish-born American citizen, first came to prominence in the 1950's, but his first sighting (with friends) was on Wednesday, October 9, 1946. In the 50s he was considered a contactee, which is someone who has allegedly had or still has contact with Extra-Terrestrial (ET) beings from the planet Venus. At the time, Adamski's Venusians were considered an impossibility:

"The most common arguments contrary to Adamski's claims forwarded by skeptics in the 1950s is that living on the planet Venus was technologically impossible considering Earth's technological advancement (in the 1950s), owing to its environmental conditions. These conditions include an atmospheric pressure at the planet's surface which is 92 times that of Earth, clouds composed of a substance thought to be sulfuric acid, and an average surface temperature of 461.85 °C. It follows that, no human from Earth could live on the surface of the planet without a highly developed technology (such as the modern Antarctic bases, underwater submarine docks and the planned Moon bases and space stations developed by NASA in the 21st century), and as a result most considered Mr. Adamski's claims to be a technological impossibility for the 1950s. It should be noted however, that the alleged Venusian visitors stated they lived in underground cities, thus not being exposed to hostile conditions on the surface... "

The discussion above goes on to relate other criticisms of Adamski's reports including identification of some of his photos as ordinary objects (like street lamps), and that his book "Inside The Space Ships" suspiciously reads like an earlier sci-fi book ghost written by Lucy McGinnis, titled "Pioneers of Space". Some people seem to consider him to be the ghost writer, which he had always strongly denied.

George Adamski is probably the most famous of all contactees. Alien Contactees are different from Abductees (those who had unwilling contact with Aliens through an abduction) is that contactees mostly expressed their experiences as positive. It is very rare when an abductee relates his or her experience as anything better than a negative experience, but more on Alien Abductions later.

Although Adamski is the best known, there were others before him. Most notably Emanuel Swedenborg ("Concerning the Earths in Our Solar System", 1758), Thomas Blott ("The Man From Mars", 1891), and finally, Theodore Flournoy ("From India To The Planet Mars, 1900).

You can also consider those in contact with the God's (Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, for example) as detailed in much of the religious literature that has been passed down through the ages such as "The Holy Bible", for example), can be considered contactees also, if you so desire. We can't see any reason why they shouldn't be included also. Since God isn't from Earth, he or she is technically an extraterrestrial.

But, Adamski is the first contactee from the pre-modern age of UFOs to actually include (and photograph) some UFO sightings along with his contactee reports. His first report was shortly before Kenneth Arnold's sighting in 1947. For a time after the the Arnold sighting, contactees began to include them in their reports, but more recently, contact has been predominantly telepathic in nature.

Many Ufologist consider contactees the lunatic fringe of an already fringe science. It detracts from what many consider a serious science. Dave considers it just part of the UFO experience. He explains this further by comparing "Contactees" and "Abductees" to scientific research in the animal world, "If animal's could think and talk, what would they say about all the things done to them in the name of science. Would their experiences be the same as 'Contactees' or 'Abductees'?"

Scientist would say it's a necessary evil for the betterment of mankind. It's part of the scientific experience. Maybe contacting humans is an, as yet, unexplained part of the UFO experience.

The subject of "Contactees" is an interesting subject, but I really find nothing in it to prove or disprove that UFOs (from other planets) really exist. I think Carl Sagan said it best,

The extraterrestrials are very advanced, remember. So I ask things like, 'Please give a short proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem.' Or the Goldbach Conjecture. And then I have to explain what these are, because extraterrestrials will not call it Fermat’s Last Theorem, so I write out the little equation with the exponents. I never get an answer. On the other hand, if I ask something like 'Should we humans be good? I always get an answer. I think something can be deduced from this differential ability to answer questions. Anything vague they are extremely happy to respond to, but anything specific, where there is a chance to find out if they actually know anything, there is only silence... "

But, maybe like the "prime directive" from "Star Trek", the original TV show from the 60s, Aliens are (paraphrasing) not suppose to interfere, technologically, in other civilizations on other worlds. Hell for all we know, Gene Roddenberry might have been a "Contactee".

Of course, I'd like to see how Sagan wrote out these equations? Maybe our written word is gibberish to them, unless someone thinks it, or maybe, the equations themselves are gibberish to them and if the people trying to telepathically relay the questions don't know what the symbols mean, what happens then? How can you answer a question that's asked in gibberish? Maybe they should have contacted Carl Sagan instead?

Some people actually believe that almost all the knowledge we've learned to date was given to us telepathically. I have read, although I can't remember any of the specific details off hand, that some scientific problems were solved while people were asleep. If they can contact us telepathically, that would make more sense than flying all those lighyears just to tell us to be good, but that's just my opinion. Why would they even care, but maybe it's like Dave said, "It's just part of the UFO experience."

Although Adamski's first reported sighting (1946) was before the Arnold sighting in 1947 (where we begin our discussion of the Modern Age of UFOs), most of his "Contactee" reports occur afterwards, which brings us nicely into the next section, the Modern Age of UFOs.

The Modern Age of UFOs, we feel (and so do many others), started with the sighting by Kenneth Arnold near Mount Rainier in Washington State on Tuesday, June 24th in 1947. Not so much the sighting itself, but by the words used by Arnold himself to describe them, "The objects moved like saucers skipping across the water," and this was translated by the newspapers into "flying saucers", which after that became anomolous with the term UFOs which wasn't invented (by the United States Air Force) until 1952, to include all the various shapes, and not just saucer shaped, which were being reported at the time.

After the newspapers reported the Arnold sighting, reports of strange sights in the sky almost took off like a rocket. It has been estimated that in the 50s there were no less than a thousand sightings reported, some of which have yet to be given a satisfatory explanation.

Not only that but, not more than a week or two after the Arnold sighting, the Roswell crash was reported to have happened. You can go into the 1947 archives of any of the major newspapers at the time and see both articles and read them.

THE FOLLOWING IS CURRENTLY BEING EDITED:
Interestingly enough, even though the news of the Roswell crash was sensational at the time, real interest in it didn't really pick up and take off (it was literally forgotten by almost everyone) until the 1970s.

Today, Roswell is considered, by many, the UFO capital of the world, the center of everything UFO, despite some Ufologists' beliefs that aliens had nothing to do with it. But at the time it happened, the Roswell Incident was shelved and almost forgotten. Something even more menacing than a crashed UFO was about to happen that would change UFO research forever.

But first before we get into that, let's look at the history of the U.S. military's involvement in UFO history.

UFOS AND THE U.S. MILITARY

There were many other projects, around the world, that were started at about the same time, but many of them worked like ours did, and in the end they all basicly came up with the same conclusions. There was nothing to it all. UFOs were not a threat to National Security, or something like that.

Anyway, here's a quick and select history of the U.S. Militaries' related involvement in UFO history and other significantly related incidents.

          PROJECT SIGN (1947-1948)
The most famous of them all, of course, was "Project Blue Book", but that project is just part of the story. The very beginning was at the end of 1947 with "Project Sign".

          PROJECT GRUDGE (1948-1952)
By the end of 1948, "Project Sign" was succeeded by "Project Grudge".

   following docu-vid on the alleged crash of a UFO in 
   Kecksburg, Pennsylvania on December 9, 1965.

We were surprised at how little known this crash is, especially 
   compared to the alleged Roswell UFO crash of 1947.
