SUMMARY:
One of the most interesting scientific theories of our time (and possibly
of all time) is String Theory. It is the kind of theory that
predicts and provides a theoretical basis for parallel and alternate
universes, time travel, and even shapeshifting creatures like werewolves
and vampires. It theorizes that the basic building block of matter are not
solids, but vibrating energy waves, or filaments (which are figuratively
represented by open and closed string structures attached to branes),
which in turn are technically maleable into anything predictable using the rules of
quantum mechanics which in turn are only restricted by the rules of
mathematical probability.
In short, quantum mechanics (along with string theory) allow for the possibility that anything can happen, but not always probable that it will.
Another interesting aspect is that it is that it may be that elusive "theory of everything" or the "unifying theory" that "unifies" quantum gravity, which is gravity that controls small things like atoms, and the gravity of relativity which controls larger objects like planets. Physics is mostly based on mathematical equations and quantum gravity and relativity are no exception. The problem is that gravity does not follow the same mathematical rules depending upon the size of the object it is trying to control.
