INTRODUCTION: WHAT IS SPONTANEOUS HUMAN COMBUSTION?

Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) is an event whereby the human body spontaneously combust for no apparent reason, and thus the name.

HISTORY

Back before the 19th turned into the 20th century, Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) was considered a real possibility, but by the end of the 1800s, advances in biology and other sciences like chemistry had replaced this bizarre and unexplained event with something more mundane and explainable like the explosion of naturally occuring gases in the human body. Past SHC reports were then considered just poorly investigated events.

The belief in SHC didn't disappear overnight, but as a result of a succession of ideas and scientific concepts that helped put an end to the notion that the body could suddenly, and without warning or explanation, explode and be reduced to burnt embers with very little damage to the surrounding furniture or living structure.

With the water content being so high in comparison to the amount of fat in the human body, scientist could see how it could burn long enough to reduce it to what was reported found in most SHC cases.

In an April 22, 1905 issue of "American Medicine", the following sentence appeared, " ...of the total number of cases published, nearly half have been reported from the neurotic land of France... ", and this, at least according to "Mysteries of the Unexplained", didn't help the case of those who believed in SHC.
