WHAT HAPPENED:
The comet Hale-Bopp passed nearest to us, 100 million miles, on this date in 1997.

In July of 1995, amateur astronomers Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp discovered a comet the size of a city, 20 to 50 kilometers in diameter.

Harold Weaver, an astronomer, explained further that,

"This comet is considerably bigger than Haley's, which is considered to be a very large comet, "
