LOCATION:
Chatham Islands, Pacific Ocean
(600 miles east of New Zealand)
WHAT HAPPENED:
A research ship netted a 26-foot-long giant female squid near the
Chatham Islands
It was one of merely twenty known captures in the last ten years.
The remains were kept refrigerated until the ship reached Wellington, New Zealand in January of the next year (1996), but eventually ended up in Melbourne, Australia at the Museum of Victoria, in its Department of Invertebrate Zoology which was (at the time) headed by Dr. CC Lu.
