WHAT HAPPENED:
Discovered today by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp, the Hale-Bopp comet was
due to be nearest the Earth during the spring of 1997.
It was considered the biggest comet to visit the inner Solar System since the great comet of 1811. It had a 20 - 50 kilometer core, and was also traveling at a speed of 10 miles per second.
