LOCATION:
Mount Everest, Nepal

WHAT HAPPENED:
While climbing Mount Everest, George Leigh-Mallory and Andrew C. Irvine were less than a thousand feet from the summit when a swirling mist of wind driven snow hid them from the view of the telescope which was being used to follow their progress from the base camp below, and were never seen or heard from again.

The summit of Mount Everest was finally and officially reached in 1953, but the possibility that it was reached much earlier (in the year 1924) has always been an interesting adventure in speculation.

Although just recently (1999), there was an expedition to the top of Everest to recover the body of George Leigh-Mallory, which had first been spotted in 1975.
