THIS DAY IN HISTORY (TDIH)
SEP-08 <<<< SEP-09 >>>> SEP-10
LOCATION:
Norfolk, UK
WHAT HAPPENED:
Oil began pouring from the walls and ceilings of the Swanton Novers
Rectory in 1919. At one point the flow of oil was about a quart every ten
minutes. The theory that the oil was somehow coming from a natural oil
well had to be abandoned when the oil was found to be refined gasoline.
In September of that same year, a magician and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Williams, arrived at the rectory to investigate. On the 9th, they announced that the culprit was a 15-year-old maid. The maid denied the accusation and said she had been beaten into confessing.
The large quantity of oil that had been recovered made it seem unlikely that the maid was the culprit.
