WHAT HAPPENED:
The parents identified the remains of a murder victim as their missing
daughter. During her funeral, Grace Marian Perkins walked in to tell her
parents she had not disappeared, only eloped.
A different version of this story appeared in the
"The Albany Law Journal: Volume 57-58" (p. 213)
Albany, October 1, 1898
" ...The dismembered trunk of a young woman, evidently murdered and then mutilated, is found in a pond near Bridgeport, Conn.; these remains are positively identified by Mr. Perkins as those of his daughter, by means of birthmarks and scars on the body; further corroboration being furnished by the dentist who had filled Miss Perkins' teeth, and whose descriptions of the fillings tally with those in the mouth of the dead girl; the father is willing to stake his life that the remains are those of his missing daughter; he gathers them up tenderly, has them shipped to his home, and they reach there just as the supposed victim alights from a train at the same station well and happy...
