WHAT HAPPENED:
THE LOOSLEY INCIDENT
William Robert Loosley, an undertaker, while taking a walk in his garden saw a light moving across the sky, followed by a noise that shook the air like thunder. He then saw the light land in a nearby wooded area.
The next day, he investigated the landing site and found a metal object about 18 inches high that gave off a bright purple beam of light. After finding it, it started following him around and at one point stopped long enough to suck up a dead rat.
Although accepted as fact back in 1871, it is now considered to be a work of fiction devised by a British science fiction writer.
