LOCATION:
Roanoke Island, NC   USA

WHAT HAPPENED:
The first British child, Virginia Dare, was born in America on the infamous Roanoke Island on this date back in 1587.

After Virginia was born, the ship that brought the Dares to America eventually returned to Europe with all but ten men who remained to begin a settlement.

Some time later, another ship returned and found no one from the original settlement. That ship eventually returned to England, leaving behind another 100 men.

Again, some time after the 100 men were left behind, another ship arrived and again found an empty island, but this time the words "CRO" were carved in one tree and "CROATAN" in another.

Though many theories have been put forth through out the years, this mysterious disappearance still remains unsolved.
