THIS DAY IN HISTORY (TDIH)
MAY-30 <<<< MAY-31 >>>> JUN >>>> JUN-01
LOCATION:
Mato Grosso, Brazil
WHAT HAPPENED:
An expedition, which had begun on
April 20th, 1925
into the almost uncharted region of the Mato Grosso in Brazil, had started
off uneventful enough.
Today a dispatch was received from Lt. Col. Percy Fawcett who had led the expedition. It read, in part:
"We have cut our way through miles of cerraba, a forest of low dry scrub; we have crossed innumerable small streams by swimming and fording; we have climbed rocky hills of forbidding aspect; we have been eaten by bugs.[...]
"We shall not get into interesting country for another two weeks."
Members of this expedition were never seen or heard from again. Since the Lieutenant hadn't expected to be back for atleast two years, no one initiated a search until May of 1928.
