The answer to that depends on what kind of werewolf you're talking about.

There are a multitude of different werewolf types. From the shapeshifting kind to the psychological disorder called lycanthropy.

Here is a list of the different types;

Shapeshifter. Of this type there are two kinds. One shapeshift from a human to a real wolf, and the second shapeshift to a manlike wolf.

Are you refering to the mythology and folklore surrounding the belief that has been around since atleast 3,000 BC with the "Epic of Gilgamesh"?

Or, are you talking about the psychological disorder known as lycanthropy?

Or, are you refering to the Hollywood version that was created in 1935 and gained increased popularity with the 1941 release of the film "The Wolfman" starring Lon Chaney, or the current version reintroduced by the "Twilight" series which really hasn't changed much since the early days of Hollywood?

The first known literary mention of a werewolf

The werewolf mythology has been around long before Hollywood reinvented decided to reinvent it. No discussion about the werewolf would not be complete without atleast touching upon the Hollywood version for a paragraph or two and that is what we will do until we begin relating its long history.

According to the Hollywood version of the mythology, the werewolf was a shapeshifting creature that turned into a wolf every full moon. They lost all control while they were a wolf, and lost all memory when turned back into a human. They were impervious to everything except silver. This was the only thing that could kill them. Atleast, that's what the Hollywood version used to be about, dating back to Lon Chaney and "The Wolfman". Now, it's morphed into something almost completely different.
